In a surprise to many Republican insiders, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice presidential prospect list for John McCain. But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick.

“Romney as favorite” is the hot buzz in Republican circles, and top party advisers said the case is compelling.

Campaign insiders say McCain plans to name his running mate very shortly after Barack Obama does, as part of what one campaign planner called a “bounce-mitigation strategy.”

The Democratic convention is in late August, a week ahead of the Republican convention. That means McCain can size up the opposing ticket before locking in his own.

Click Here http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0608/11435.html to read the rest of the article on Politico

As our country continues to face economic struggles and all of the talking heads in the mainstream media are preaching doom and gloom and blaming all of our woes on the War on Terror, let's take a moment and gain some perspective. American's have a much larger tax burden than ever before in history. Why? Our politicians cannot stop their over-spending habits.

We need Mitt as the CFO of the United States of America. We need Mitt to cut costs and duplicitious government agencies and departments. We need Mitt to do for our Federal Budget what he has done for so many corporations in America.

I was shocked when I saw the numbers that you will read below. While we need to help those Americans who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina, I don't think we need to make them all millionaires. Check out the figures below:
The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money. <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><o></o>
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth .

E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are on e of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787.

C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Are calculators in Congress broken? <o></o> <o></o>

Accounts Receivable Tax
Building Permit Tax
CDL License Tax
Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Dog License Tax
Federal Income Tax
Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax
Fuel Perm it Tax
Gasoline Tax
Hunting License Tax
Inheritance Tax
Inventory Tax
IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax) ,
IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax),
Liquor Tax,
Luxury Tax,
Marriage License Tax,
Medicare Tax,
Property Tax,
Real Estate Tax,
Service charge taxes,
Social Security Tax,
Road Usage Tax (Truckers),
Sales Taxes,
Recreational Vehicle Tax,
School Tax,
State Income Tax,
State Unemployment Tax (SUTA),
Telephone Federal Excise Tax,
Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax,
Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax,
Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax,
Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax,
Telephone State and Local Tax,
Telephone Usage Charge Tax,
Utility Tax,
Vehicle License Registration Tax,
Vehicle Sales Tax,
Watercraft Registration Tax,
Well Permit Tax,
Workers Compensation Tax.

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago,
and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world.
I had a very interesting conversation with my Dad and a friend this weekend. I should preface my comments with a little background on my Dad and my friend. My Dad has worked in the mining industry most of his adult life. I grew up in the heart of Utah Coal Country. My friend, actually my cousin's husband, is an engineer for the Kennecott Copper Mine. Needless to say, they understand the technology described in the article below much better than I do, but what I was really blown away by was an observation my Dad made. <O></O>My Dad asked us "What was the terrorist's purpose in attacking the World Trade Center?” I replied, "To attack our economic base". He then looked at us and said “what is under siege right now by OPEC not producing more oil?” <O></O>It hit me square between the eyes. We are being attacked by the terrorists again. They are mounting a very successful attack on the US economy by holding us hostage with oil prices. This could be a more successful and damaging attack than the one on 9/11. The price of oil has a serious trickle-down effect on the price of everything from our food to building supplies. We are allowing the terrorist sponsored nations of OPEC to destroy our economy, our standard of living and eventually our standing as the world's super power. <O></O>It is time to wake up! We need to start demanding action by our government to end this attack on our economy, The United States of America has the resources and the technology to become not only self-sufficient as an energy producer, but a leading oil exporter. We need to turn the tables on the terrorists and sell our own oil and stop their money supply.<O></O>We have more oil than the Middle East Peninsula in the Rocky Mountain States.
Oil-shale extraction technology has a new owner

As a long-term petroleum source, oil-shale reserves are vast but remain elusive. Oil-services giant Schlumberger is aiming to change that with the recent purchase of a radio-frequency (RF)/critical-fluid (CF) extraction technology that unlocks this vast resource and brings it to the surface in a cost-effective and environmentally sound manner.

Oil shale is a type of sedimentary rock that contains solid bituminous material, known as kerogen, that releases oil or gas when heated. While oil-shale deposits are found in many places around the world, the largest deposits by far reside in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. Oil-shale reserves are estimated at nearly 2 trillion bbl in the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming alone, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This quantity would be sufficient to meet U.S. demand at current levels for the next 250 years.

However, successfully harvesting this vast resource has been technically, economically, and environmentally challenging. The most common methods of recovering oil shale include a mining step, in which the shale is mined from the surface or underground and then transported to a facility for further processing. The waxy, solid nature of the shale necessitates a heating process, known as retorting, to release the trapped oil and allow it to flow out of the rock matrix.

The large environmental and processing costs associated with this method of oil-shale extraction have prevented it from becoming a major petroleum source. According to an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prepared by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management, the environmental impacts include emission of greenhouse gases during mining and processing, disturbance of mined lands, need for disposal of the spent shale, use of water resources, and impacts on air and water quality. These factors contribute to the relatively high cost of producing oil from shale, which the EIS estimates at greater than USD60/bbl.

The RF/CF extraction technology developed by Raytheon and technology partner CF Technologies aims to lower these environmental and processing impacts dramatically by employing an in-situ retorting process. In this process, wells are drilled into the shale strata using standard drilling equipment. Raytheon's RF transmitters (which have been used extensively for radar and guidance systems) are then lowered into the well. The transmitters emit a radio signal at a frequency that uniformly heats the shale and liquefies the trapped petroleum.

Supercritical carbon dioxide is then pumped into the heated shale formation to extract the oil from the rock and carry it to a producing well. At the surface, the carbon dioxide is separated from the oil, reprocessed, and pumped back into the injection wells. The recovered oil is sent for further processing and refining.

Raytheon estimates that this combination of RF technology to heat the shale followed by a critical-fluid flush to bring the oil to the surface will result in significant environmental benefits and cost savings over other shale-extraction methods. The technology can retrieve 4 to 5 bbl of oil for every barrel consumed during the extraction process, while other in-situ retorting processes reportedly extract only 1.5 to 3 bbl for every barrel consumed.

In addition, the RF/CF technology enables extraction to start 1 to 2 months after the transmitters are activated. Other in-situ methods using in-ground electrical heating systems may take 2 to 3 years to heat the shale sufficiently for oil to flow.

The sale to Schlumberger promises to open up new application areas for this technology and is part of a Raytheon initiative to expand its RF and communication-systems technologies to a customer base outside of the security and defense arenas. Four years ago, Raytheon created the Mission Innovation group within its Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) division, which had a goal of focusing mature defense capabilities to address challenges in energy exploration and the environment.

"Schlumberger is the world leader in bringing new technology to the field for the exploration and production of oil," said Lee Silvestre, vice president of the Mission Innovation group of Raytheon IDS. "Its acquisition of this technology is an important milestone in Raytheon's approach to applying proven technology that can unlock potential in adjacent markets."

To learn more about this oil-extraction technology, contact Raytheon.

His Illinois state senate district encompassed the South Side of Chicago, where it's a foregone conclusion that the Democratic nominee will triumph -- and when he won the party's U.S. Senate nod in 2004, Obama fortuitously drew the infeasible Alan Keyes as his opponent.

What this has meant, practically speaking, is that Obama has never had to run a general election campaign against a viable Republican in which his liberal views underwent scrutiny and he was forced to move to the center to compete for independents. This has already caused Obama to undergo a series of policy shifts that warrant close examination.

IN 2003, WHEN Obama was still an obscure state legislator making a long shot bid for the U.S. Senate, he was a proud liberal ideologue. In a lengthy questionnaire filled out that December for the staunch liberal Independent Voters of Illinois--Independent Precinct Organization, Obama vowed that as U.S. Senator, he would be "a champion for the progressive agenda" and boasted that he had "demonstrated the backbone and passion to really fight for progressive causes, even when the political winds are blowing in the other direction."

On virtually every significant domestic and foreign policy issue he was asked about, Obama adopted the far left position, and he has already reversed several of them during his current campaign.

In the 2003 questionnaire, Obama said he favored normalizing relations with Cuba and opposed continuing the embargo because it, "only makes adversaries of our allies and perpetuates our go-it-alone foreign policy." Yet last August, he visited Miami and vowed, "As president, I'll maintain the embargo -- it's an important inducement for change because we know that Castro's death will not guarantee freedom."

During the current campaign, Obama has called for increasing the size of the military and taking more aggressive action in Afghanistan. But in the questionnaire, he spoke of increasing diplomacy as a way to "reduce our military budget" and seemed to support pulling troops out of Afghanistan. (After blasting the mounting cost of the occupation of Iraq, he said, "At the same time, we continue to post troops in Afghanistan and even in Kosovo.")

While in a 1996 questionnaire for the same group Obama wrote that he supported state legislation to "ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns," by 2003 he realized that "a complete ban on handguns is not politically practicable." Instead, he told the group he believed in "reasonable restrictions" on their sale and possession. So far in this election, Obama has declined to take a stand on the D.C. gun ban case and has remained vague about his ultimate position on gun rights.

At an AFL-CIO event in 2003, Obama came out firmly in favor of a single-payer health care system, which is academic-speak for a socialized system in which the government is the sole purchaser of medical care.

"I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care plan," he said to applause. He added, "As all of you know, we may not get there immediately, because first we've got to take back the White House, and we've got to take back the Senate, and we've got to take back the House."

During the Democratic nomination battle, Obama insisted that he meant he would support such a system, "if we were starting from scratch." But clearly, his original statement was made in the present tense and reflected his future aspirations -- there was nothing conditional about it.

Though he did have to move toward the center even to make himself a viable candidate for the Democratic nomination, there's simply no way that he could have pulled off his historic upset of the Clinton machine were it not for his ability to energize liberals by maintaining progressive positions on most issues.

NO DOUBT, OBAMA'S 2002 speech against the Iraq War was his most significant asset. But he also took advantage of several openings to make the case that his candidacy represented a break from "conventional Washington thinking" while Hillary Clinton represented a continuation of the failed status quo.

A central part of that sales pitch was his answer in the YouTube debate last July, in which he confidently said he would meet separately, without preconditions, within the first year of his administration, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea. (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's face flashed on the screen when Iran was mentioned.)

Obama also assailed Clinton in an op-ed for the New Hamshire Union-Leader for being the only Democratic presidential candidate to vote for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment designating Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. In the article, Obama called the amendment "reckless," and said it could be used to justify a continued troop presence in Iraq and exploited as a pretext to attack Iran.

But in an address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee on Wednesday, Obama repositioned himself on both fronts.

When he referred to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, he added, "whose Quds force has rightly been labeled a terrorist organization."

As for negotiating with Iran, his shift was even more dramatic.

"Contrary to the claims of some, I have no interest in sitting down with our adversaries just for the sake of talking," he said. "But as President of the United States, I would be willing to lead tough and principled diplomacy with the appropriate Iranian leader at a time and place of my choosing -- if, and only if -- it can advance the interests of the United States."

But conducting diplomacy based on whether it will advance U.S. interests isn't much of a departure from the current Bush policy, an "appropriate Iranian leader" is much different from meeting with Ahmadinejad, and "a time and place of my choosing" is different from a pledge to do so within the first year of his administration.

OBAMA'S REVERSALS on these issues, as well as the mixed signals he has been giving on taxes, trade, how he actually plans to withdraw troops from Iraq, and a host of other matters, can perhaps be seen in some sense as a positive. After all, if it turns out that Obama is just a typical, opportunistic politician, there's reason to hope that he would govern more pragmatically than his ideologically liberal background, and voting record, would suggest.

On the other hand, given that Obama has such a thin public record, Americans have no way of evaluating him other than on the basis of what he is currently saying. If he is so willing to change his positions and alter his rhetoric on the basis of what is most politically convenient at the time, then voters have no way of assessing how he would actually govern.

In the final debate before the New Hampshire primary, McCain said to Romney, "We disagree on a lot of issues, but I agree you are the candidate of change."

Come this fall, the line could just as easily be used on Obama."

Philip Klein is a reporter for The American Spectator.

"More than 1,500 astrologers are now meeting in Denver, site of the Democratic National Convention in August. The event concludes Tuesday with a panel picking the supposed winner of the presidential race, based on astrological charts for John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. As for the second half of the tickets, astrologer Shelley Ackerman predicts Senator Joe Biden will be the Democratic's Veep pick. Ackerman says the GOP will go with Mitt Romney as their vice presidential nominee. America is Not in an Energy Crisis- Rather an Energy Management Crisis

Check out Articles like this in our members section

Written By: Paul Imbriale

America is currently experiencing record energy costs. This rise in energy costs is not only making it more expensive to drive our automobiles, it is putting pressure on other commodities. Our food needs to be delivered and the myriad of products we use in every day life also have a basis in petroleum. To some this is a surprise. To those like Mitt Romney, who are familiar with economics and energy, it is a vindication of all that they have been warning about for a long time.

America is not in an energy crisis as is constantly regurgitated in the liberally biased media. In fact, our woes are self inflicted. We have had a moratorium on oil drilling and refineries in this country for 20 years. We created these problems for ourselves by ignoring the free market, and common sense. We have for too long caved in to liberal environmentalist special interests. With the oil reserves in this country we could run on domestic oil for 60 years without importing a drop. When shale oil is factored in, we could be energy independent for over 120 years. Sadly, we still have not learned our lesson. There are still no plans to build nuclear plants or drill for oil. We continue to hear platitudes about our oil addiction, and the need to rid ourselves of foreign oil. Yet, no constructive measures are taken. President Bush asked to drill in ANWR. The response from Speaker Pelosi was a call to raise taxes on oil companies. With that “plan” you will be paying an additional $2 a gallon by next year. If we did nothing more than hold a new drill over an oil reserve the price of oil would drop just on the threat that we would be moving toward a market based energy solution.

I loved his "elitist" comments and how we need to lift all the American people. Romney also discusses the economy and McCain's plan and differences. One of our readers sent the following;

"McCain is fortunate to have Mitt's support. He's not a sore loses but is finding ways to help McCain gain support from voters. He's no longer running AGAINST John but is working FOR John. You can remember their former food fights or you can appreciate the fact that John has the support of a former foe.

Mitt was bold in his contrasting his economic experience with John but now Mitt is saying the other side of the coin (both sides are accurate) that John has had years of Congressional experience and does know where the Congressional waste is.

Foes can stop fighting and work for the good of the country the way John and McCain are doing. It is a good example for the rest of us to let go of our minor differences and unite inside the GOP for the good of our party and nation. We will need to come back with a strong defense to re-educate to public that is getting fed half truths again. We have completed all the filings for the PAC and can begin accepting contributions and dues to raise the funds to buy ads in newspapers just as this group has done. We'll have the membership side of the site launched very soon. Here is a link to a good article that describes the anti-Romney campaign. http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/351354.aspx
I would love your Responses on HOW YOU THINK WE SHOULD BE PLANNING TO FIGHT FOR ROMNEY FOR VP AND THE BEST WAYS TO GET MCCAIN'S ATTENTION.

"Faith in America," delivered at the George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas by Mitt Romney on December 6, 2007.

Romney: Thank you, Mr. President, for your kind introduction.

"It is an honor to be here today. This is an inspiring place because of you and the first lady, and because of the film exhibited across the way in the Presidential library. For those who have not seen it, it shows the President as a young pilot, shot down during the Second World War, being rescued from his life-raft by the crew of an American submarine. It is a moving reminder that when America has faced challenge and peril, Americans rise to the occasion, willing to risk their very lives to defend freedom and preserve our nation. We are in your debt. Thank you, Mr. President.

"Mr. President, your generation rose to the occasion, first to defeat Fascism and then to vanquish the Soviet Union. You left us, your children, a free and strong America. It is why we call yours the greatest generation. It is now my generation's turn. How we respond to today's challenges will define our generation. And it will determine what kind of America we will leave our children, and theirs.

"America faces a new generation of challenges. Radical violent Islam seeks to destroy us. An emerging China endeavors to surpass our economic leadership. And we are troubled at home by government overspending, overuse of foreign oil, and the breakdown of the family.

"Over the last year, we have embarked on a national debate on how best to preserve American leadership. Today, I wish to address a topic which I believe is fundamental to America's greatness: our religious liberty. I will also offer perspectives on how my own faith would inform my presidency, if I were elected.

"There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us. If so, they are at odds with the nation's founders, for they, when our nation faced its greatest peril, sought the blessings of the Creator. And further, they discovered the essential connection between the survival of a free land and the protection of religious freedom. In John Adams' words: 'We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion... Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people.'

"Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone.

"Given our grand tradition of religious tolerance and liberty, some wonder whether there are any questions regarding an aspiring candidate's religion that are appropriate. I believe there are. And I will answer them today.

"Almost 50 years ago another candidate from Massachusetts explained that he was an American running for president, not a Catholic running for president. Like him, I am an American running for president. I do not define my candidacy by my religion. A person should not be elected because of his faith nor should he be rejected because of his faith.

"Let me assure you that no authorities of my church, or of any other church for that matter, will ever exert influence on presidential decisions. Their authority is theirs, within the province of church affairs, and it ends where the affairs of the nation begin.

"As governor, I tried to do the right as best I knew it, serving the law and answering to the Constitution. I did not confuse the particular teachings of my church with the obligations of the office and of the Constitution - and of course, I would not do so as president. I will put no doctrine of any church above the plain duties of the office and the sovereign authority of the law.

"As a young man, Lincoln described what he called America's 'political religion' - the commitment to defend the rule of law and the Constitution. When I place my hand on the Bible and take the oath of office, that oath becomes my highest promise to God. If I am fortunate to become your president, I will serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause, and no one interest. A president must serve only the common cause of the people of the United States.

"There are some for whom these commitments are not enough. They would prefer it if I would simply distance myself from my religion, say that it is more a tradition than my personal conviction, or disavow one or another of its precepts. That I will not do. I believe in my Mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it. My faith is the faith of my fathers - I will be true to them and to my beliefs.

"Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy. If they are right, so be it. But I think they underestimate the American people. Americans do not respect believers of convenience.

Americans tire of those who would jettison their beliefs, even to gain the world.

"There is one fundamental question about which I often am asked. What do I believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. My church's beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths. Each religion has its own unique doctrines and history. These are not bases for criticism but rather a test of our tolerance. Religious tolerance would be a shallow principle indeed if it were reserved only for faiths with which we agree.

"There are some who would have a presidential candidate describe and explain his church's distinctive doctrines. To do so would enable the very religious test the founders prohibited in the Constitution. No candidate should become the spokesman for his faith. For if he becomes president he will need the prayers of the people of all faiths.

"I believe that every faith I have encountered draws its adherents closer to God. And in every faith I have come to know, there are features I wish were in my own: I love the profound ceremony of the Catholic Mass, the approachability of God in the prayers of the Evangelicals, the tenderness of spirit among the Pentecostals, the confident independence of the Lutherans, the ancient traditions of the Jews, unchanged through the ages, and the commitment to frequent prayer of the Muslims. As I travel across the country and see our towns and cities, I am always moved by the many houses of worship with their steeples, all pointing to heaven, reminding us of the source of life's blessings.

"It is important to recognize that while differences in theology exist between the churches in America, we share a common creed of moral convictions. And where the affairs of our nation are concerned, it's usually a sound rule to focus on the latter - on the great moral principles that urge us all on a common course. Whether it was the cause of abolition, or civil rights, or the right to life itself, no movement of conscience can succeed in America that cannot speak to the convictions of religious people.

"We separate church and state affairs in this country, and for good reason. No religion should dictate to the state nor should the state interfere with the free practice of religion. But in recent years, the notion of the separation of church and state has been taken by some well beyond its original meaning. They seek to remove from the public domain any acknowledgment of God. Religion is seen as merely a private affair with no place in public life. It is as if they are intent on establishing a new religion in America - the religion of secularism. They are wrong.

"The founders proscribed the establishment of a state religion, but they did not countenance the elimination of religion from the public square. We are a nation 'Under God' and in God, we do indeed trust.

"We should acknowledge the Creator as did the Founders - in ceremony and word. He should remain on our currency, in our pledge, in the teaching of our history, and during the holiday season, nativity scenes and menorahs should be welcome in our public places. Our greatness would not long endure without judges who respect the foundation of faith upon which our constitution rests. I will take care to separate the affairs of government from any religion, but I will not separate us from 'the God who gave us liberty.'

"Nor would I separate us from our religious heritage. Perhaps the most important question to ask a person of faith who seeks a political office, is this: does he share these American values: the equality of human kind, the obligation to serve one another, and a steadfast commitment to liberty?

"They are not unique to any one denomination. They belong to the great moral inheritance we hold in common. They are the firm ground on which Americans of different faiths meet and stand as a nation, united.

"We believe that every single human being is a child of God - we are all part of the human family. The conviction of the inherent and inalienable worth of every life is still the most revolutionary political proposition ever advanced. John Adams put it that we are 'thrown into the world all equal and alike.'

"The consequence of our common humanity is our responsibility to one another, to our fellow Americans foremost, but also to every child of God. It is an obligation which is fulfilled by Americans every day, here and across the globe, without regard to creed or race or nationality.

"Americans acknowledge that liberty is a gift of God, not an indulgence of government. No people in the history of the world have sacrificed as much for liberty. The lives of hundreds of thousands of America's sons and daughters were laid down during the last century to preserve freedom, for us and for freedom loving people throughout the world. America took nothing from that Century's terrible wars - no land from Germany or Japan or Korea; no treasure; no oath of fealty. America's resolve in the defense of liberty has been tested time and again. It has not been found wanting, nor must it ever be. America must never falter in holding high the banner of freedom.

"These American values, this great moral heritage, is shared and lived in my religion as it is in yours. I was taught in my home to honor God and love my neighbor. I saw my father march with Martin Luther King. I saw my parents provide compassionate care to others, in personal ways to people nearby, and in just as consequential ways in leading national volunteer movements. I am moved by the Lord's words: 'For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me...'

"My faith is grounded on these truths. You can witness them in Ann and my marriage and in our family. We are a long way from perfect and we have surely stumbled along the way, but our aspirations, our values, are the self-same as those from the other faiths that stand upon this common foundation. And these convictions will indeed inform my presidency.

"Today's generations of Americans have always known religious liberty. Perhaps we forget the long and arduous path our nation's forbearers took to achieve it. They came here from England to seek freedom of religion. But upon finding it for themselves, they at first denied it to others. Because of their diverse beliefs, Ann Hutchinson was exiled from Massachusetts Bay, a banished Roger Williams founded Rhode Island, and two centuries later, Brigham Young set out for the West. Americans were unable to accommodate their commitment to their own faith with an appreciation for the convictions of others to different faiths. In this, they were very much like those of the European nations they had left.

"It was in Philadelphia that our founding fathers defined a revolutionary vision of liberty, grounded on self evident truths about the equality of all, and the inalienable rights with which each is endowed by his Creator.

"We cherish these sacred rights, and secure them in our Constitutional order. Foremost do we protect religious liberty, not as a matter of policy but as a matter of right. There will be no established church, and we are guaranteed the free exercise of our religion.

"I'm not sure that we fully appreciate the profound implications of our tradition of religious liberty. I have visited many of the magnificent cathedrals in Europe. They are so inspired . so grand . so empty. Raised up over generations, long ago, so many of the cathedrals now stand as the postcard backdrop to societies just too busy or too 'enlightened' to venture inside and kneel in prayer. The establishment of state religions in Europe did no favor to Europe's churches. And though you will find many people of strong faith there, the churches themselves seem to be withering away.

"Infinitely worse is the other extreme, the creed of conversion by conquest: violent Jihad, murder as martyrdom... killing Christians, Jews, and Muslims with equal indifference. These radical Islamists do their preaching not by reason or example, but in the coercion of minds and the shedding of blood. We face no greater danger today than theocratic tyranny, and the boundless suffering these states and groups could inflict if given the chance.

The diversity of our cultural expression, and the vibrancy of our religious dialogue, has kept America in the forefront of civilized nations even as others regard religious freedom as something to be destroyed.

In such a world, we can be deeply thankful that we live in a land where reason and religion are friends and allies in the cause of liberty, joined against the evils and dangers of the day. And you can be certain of this: Any believer in religious freedom, any person who has knelt in prayer to the Almighty, has a friend and ally in me. And so it is for hundreds of millions of our countrymen: We do not insist on a single strain of religion — rather, we welcome our nation's symphony of faith.

Recall the early days of the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia, during the fall of 1774. With Boston occupied by British troops, there were rumors of imminent hostilities and fears of an impending war. In this time of peril, someone suggested that they pray. But there were objections. They were too divided in religious sentiments, what with Episcopalians and Quakers, Anabaptists and Congregationalists, Presbyterians and Catholics.

Then Sam Adams rose, and said he would hear a prayer from anyone of piety and good character, as long as they were a patriot. And so together they prayed, and together they fought, and together, by the grace of God, they founded this great nation.

In that spirit, let us give thanks to the divine author of liberty. And together, let us pray that this land may always be blessed with freedom's holy light.

God bless this great land, the United States of America.

Help McCain Pick his Running Mate
