This is an EXCELLENT ANALYSIS ARTICLE of how Romney could have easily been the Republican Nominee and McCain getting lucky with the numbers. It's long but totally worth the read! The VOTERS obviously wanted 2 candidates McCain and Romney.....so put em together!
